A 49 year-old woman was hit and killed by an Uber autonomous vehicle while crossing the road in Tempe, Arizona.
Uber has since halted all driverless vehicle testing in Pittsburgh, Toronto, San Francisco and the greater Phoenix area.
The company said they are, “fully cooperating with local authorities in their investigation of this incident.”
While the car was in a full ‘self-driving’ mode there was a human safety driver behind the wheel, according to Tempe Police.
Uber started testing autonomous vehicles in 2015 and has over 200 cars across the country.
Along with Uber, General Motors and Google have been testing autonomous vehicles in the Phoenix area for the past few years.
However, this accident marks the first pedestrian fatality involving autonomous driving technology.
