Students Rally To Defend Gay Athlete

Students at John Burroughs School in Missouri rallied to support an openly gay athlete and classmate in response to a Westboro Baptist Church protest.

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church picketed the school to protest the student-athlete who came out as gay last fall.

Supporters held signs, waved rainbow flags and played music to drown out the negative messages coming from the protesters.

Members of the local LGBTQ advocacy group were also present during Monday’s counterprotest.

Ladue police officers were on hand to direct traffic and monitor the demonstration, which lasted two hours.

Bain was recently honored as a “hometown hero” by the St. Louis Blues at their Pride Night.

Bain was overwhelmed with the amount of support his community had shown him saying it “is just really special.”
