Viagra Goes Generic, the Little Blue Pill Gets Cheaper

Pre-empting the expiration of its patent, Pfizer is launching a generic version of its popular erectile dysfunction drug in December.

The patent is scheduled to expire in April 2020 – however competing drug companies can launch their own version as early as Summer 2018, which could drive the price of the drug down by nearly 20%

Viagra hit the market in 1998 and made over $1.5 billion in revenue in 2016.

In the new year, Pfizer will even subsidize insurance copayments to purchase the drug, hoping to capture market share before the market becomes competitive.
